Selecting the right CFexpress 4.0 Type B card for 8K video means balancing speed, capacity, and budget. This guide explains key specs and trade-offs.
Quick answer
For reliable 8K video, choose a CFexpress 4.0 Type B card with sustained write speeds above 1500 MB/s and enough capacity for your shoot length. The Novachips Express Series offers a 500GB option for shorter projects and a 4TB option for extended recording.
Why CFexpress 4.0 matters for 8K video
8K video requires sustained write speeds that older memory card formats like SD or CFast cannot consistently deliver. CFexpress 4.0 doubles the bandwidth of the previous generation, ensuring the camera can write every frame without dropping data. This is especially critical for high-bitrate codecs such as ProRes RAW or All-I compression.
Capacity vs. workflow
A larger capacity card lets you record longer without swapping media, but it also means more data to offload in one session. For field work where a laptop is not available, a 500GB card may be more practical. For studio or multi-cam setups, a 4TB card reduces card swaps and the risk of losing a small card.
Durability and heat management
High-speed recording generates heat. CFexpress 4.0 cards can get warm during extended 8K capture. While the Novachips Express Series is built for professional use, always check your camera's thermal guidelines and avoid direct sunlight exposure. Heat management is a trade-off for the speed you gain.
Decision rules for choosing your CFexpress 4.0 card
- Check camera compatibility: Confirm your camera supports CFexpress 4.0 Type B. Some older bodies may only work with CFexpress 2.0 or require a firmware update.
- Match sustained write speed to your codec: Look for a card with a sustained write speed that exceeds your camera's maximum bitrate. For 8K ProRes RAW at 60 fps, you typically need at least 1500 MB/s.
- Choose capacity based on shoot length and backup plan: Estimate your recording time per session. A 500GB card holds roughly 30-40 minutes of 8K ProRes RAW. A 4TB card holds 4-5 hours, but requires a larger investment. If you offload daily, a 500GB card may be enough. For multi-day shoots without a computer, the 4TB card reduces card swaps.
- Consider your backup workflow: Large capacity cards mean longer transfer times. Plan for a fast CFexpress 4.0 reader and a reliable backup drive. If you prefer smaller, frequent transfers, multiple 500GB cards are a solid choice.
